I'm interested in acquiring your domain name "waste.org". I do not need to disconnect your current service. I am open to many possibilities, including buying it, and leasing it back to you for several years to come (for a dollar per year). If you're open to a sale of "waste.org", please let me know. I promise to be very flexible, if you're interested. Thanks. -Vince ------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: Olivia Xymoron To: Vince4SDS@aol.com Cc: management@omitted Subject: Re: Question On Tue, 16 Feb 1999 Vince4SDS@aol.com wrote: > I am building a waste destination site for the pollution control industry (e > waste.com). I'm interested in acquiring your domain name "waste.org". It's a good thing we have all these great top level domains, so that people who aren't satisfied with just one domain can own five, twenty or even a hundred when one would do just fine. In computer science, we call this phenomenon "namespace pollution". How ironic. So I think we'll pass, unless of course you can arrange for us to acquire either poopypants.com (currently owned by Poopypants Corporation) or yomama.com (YoMama, Inc.). -- "Love the dolphins," she advised him. I must have been way off. With my new perspective, I will divest all of my other domains, and move into the woods with Ted Kaczinski. It's a problem that basically all four letter words are taken and most five and six letter ones as well, almost all of them claimed in the past _year_, even though the Internet's existed for 25 years before that. It's like cutting down all the trees in the forest at once. It's a problem that most of the .org space, originally intended for non-profits, have been gobbled up by companies who weren't satisfied with .com and .net. It's a problem that names in the future will all have to be 20+ characters and they'll have to be nonsense words because all the generic words and acronyms have been taken. It's a problem that it's taken weeks for Network Solutions to get around to processing my network number changes because people are abusing the registration services. Ahh, but now I see you've already done a pretty thorough land grab yourself: > whois gc.com Aborting search 50 records found ..... Lovely. [45 entries snipped] GC.com (GARBAGECAN2-DOM) GARBAGECAN.COM And what an authoritative site on garbage cans you have. If you have all the properties in a color group, do you get to charge extra rent on the undeveloped lots? Can you buy hotels? Did I win second prize in a beauty contest? GC.com (GARBAGECAN3-DOM) GARBAGECAN.NET Really? You're a network provider? GC.com (GARBAGECAN4-DOM) GARBAGECAN.ORG And a non-profit too? Free garbage cans for the poor? That's really quite noble of you. Too bad you can't get .mil, .edu, .gov, or .int. Have you considered registering in the Netherlands Antilles, so you could be garbagec.an? gc.com (HAULING3-DOM) HAULING.NET gc.com (HAULER4-DOM) HAULER.NET But what about haul, hauls, hauled, to-haul, will-haul, haulage, haulier, e-haul, etc? Oh, I forgot, search aborted. -- "Love the dolphins," she advised him. It seems like you're trying to save the world, one domain at a time. Obviously we are both strong-willed about our perspectives. I simply wanted to see if your cause was served by using "waste," or if you wanted to cash-in on some forethought. I don't even need the name for a few years, but I do not want some multibillion dollar company getting it. Since I am building "e waste.com", the tie-in is a little more specific. You want to damn me for being an entrepreneur. You seem worried about the little guy on-line. Once they release the next seven categories, there won't be any cornering the market. How about the three hundred national domains families? As for questioning our company, yes, we will be an on-line info network (as if there's some LAW regulating the use of .net ). Technically speaking, we will be a destination site. 25 years of the Internet? Not even close. The Internet was not a viable tool until the mid 90's. Without ISP's and search engines, the Net was no more than potential. The fact that it could be done is not the same as doing it. You sound angry that your little Net computer club is available to the real world. I used Wang's and TRS 80's when I was a kid. They sucked. The Net is the future, and we've only just started. -Vince
